Rachel McAdams says ‘Disobedience’ sex scene with Rachel Weisz was better than with any male actor

Rachel McAdams’ sex scene in her new movie was unlike any she’d shot before — and not just because it was a woman.

In “Disobedience,” McAdams plays Esti Kuperman, the married Orthodox Jewish woman who falls in love with Ronit Krushka (Rachel Weisz). The movie, based on the novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman and directed by Sebastián Lelio, includes a graphic sex scene that includes Ronit spitting into Esti’s mouth.

Every second of the scene, shot on a closed set, serves a purpose, McAdams said.

“Often, you’re trying to decide if it’s gratuitous or not. But this scene felt so integral to the plot and moving the story forward. The characters need this release to open up,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

“There was energy to that scene that I haven’t experienced in any other sex scenes (with men) in my career.”

The movie, which ends up showing just Esti’s orgasm, wasn’t about telling a lesbian story, McAdams said; it’s simply about love.

“It’s just humans being with humans,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

“I didn’t think of it as gay versus straight, only in that there was unfair oppression of their love and sexuality.”
