NORFOLK, Neb. – A stifling defense was the key to success on Saturday night for the Northeast Community College women’s basketball team.

The Hawks (13-8, 1-1 ICCAC) dismantled Marshalltown Community College 91-35 for their first ICCAC win of the season at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.

Kyla Moore (Norfolk, Neb.) sparked the Hawks’ offense in the first quarter after accounting for three-straight layups to give Northeast an early 13-5 lead. After an Eriana Brown (Des Moines, Iowa) layup later in the quarter, it was the Hawks with a demanding 21-10 lead that eventually opened the flood gates for the remainder of the game.

Marshalltown came within seven points early in the second quarter, but a Lauren Hunstad (Parker, S.D.) 3-pointer and back-to-back layups from Macey Kulhanek (Howells, Neb.) quickly ended any offensive threat from Marshalltown. Tegan Pompa (Elgin, Ill.) hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds to play in the half to give the Hawks a 41-25 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Hawks allowed only 10 points in the entire second half, while registering 25 points in the third quarter and 25 in the fourth. Northeast led by as many as 59 points in the fourth quarter and out-scored the Marshalltown bench 57-8.

In 20 minutes of work, Moore led the Hawks in scoring with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals. Kulhanek added 13 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the field. Pompa and Brown chipped in 10 points each, shooting a combined 9-of-11 from the field.

The Hawks shot 53 percent from the field compared to just 29 percent by the Tigers.

Northeast welcomes Western Nebraska Community College for a 5 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
