NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College men’s soccer team fell to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) here Saturday, 6-2.

Northeast started the game strong with several early scoring opportunities. Coach Doug Seigle said that overall, the game was much closer than the final score indicated.

“I thought we started very strong with the better of play and scoring opportunities in the first 25 minutes of the match when NIACC scored against the flow of play.” The goal was the first of three for NIACC within 10 minutes of play, giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead at the half.

The Hawks regrouped at halftime and played much more effectively, but NIACC scored a fourth goal coming off a direct free kick.

Northeast struck back in the final 30 minutes of the game, with Brady Fister netting an unassisted goal at the 60^th minute, and Daniel Isaza scoring one at the 75^th minute with an assist by Cameron Krueger.

NIACC outshot Northeast, 18-14, and also led in shots on goal, 10-5. The Trojans recorded three saves. For Northeast, Troy Elliott and Carter Holthus had two saves each.

“I am happy that our offense is improving and creating more scoring opportunities, but we must continue to play quicker and put our shots on goal,” said Seigle. “I believe that the team has been working hard and will continue to improve, but we need to get better mentally.” Seigle also noted that the Hawks have been starting a number of freshmen this year, with only three returning players from the previous season.

The Hawks return to action today when they head to Columbus to face Central Community College. Game time is 4 p.m.
