NORFOLK – A professional cellist from Omaha will perform in concert at Northeast Community College in Norfolk.
Sophia Potter will perform in the Cox Activities Center on Tuesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Northeast music and theatre departments, is free and open to the public.
Potter, founder of the Omaha-based Rangbrook Ensemble, is a professional string sextet dedicated to the performance of classical music and music education of all ages. “In order to make classic music accessible and enjoyable for everyone in the community, the six-member ensemble offers all main series concerts at no charge to the public,” she said.
Her live cello performance in Norfolk is part of the ensemble’s “Little Cellist on the Prairie” 2014 Tour of Northern and Central Nebraska. The tour includes free solo cello educational outreach for schools in Columbus, Norfolk, Ainsworth, Valentine, and Stapleton. In Norfolk, she will visit Jefferson and Bel-Air Elementary Schools and the Norfolk Middle School. In addition to Norfolk, Potter has evening performances in Valentine and North Platte. The programs will include solo cello works by J.S. Bach, Bright Sheng, and Mark Summer.
Potter is a native of Lincoln and received her bachelor of arts in cello performance from Oberlin College in 2007 and her masters in music in cello performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2009. She moved to Omaha from Cleveland in 2010 to found the Rangbrook Ensemble.
