Shaw and Kelchner lead Hawks to series sweep

NORFOLK, Neb. – Andrew Shaw (Dillon, Colo.) and Hunter Kelchner (Grand Junction, Colo.) did what they needed to do to give the Northeast Community College baseball team a chance to win on Monday.
Both starting pitchers turned in a solid days work as the Hawks (19-11, 10-6 ICCAC) swept Iowa Lakes Community College 6-3 and 9-1 in ICCAC action at Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk.
Shaw threw six innings, allowing two earned runs off seven hits, while striking out 10 batters. Kelchner had a no-hitter going until the seventh when he gave up just two hits in the complete-game effort. The freshman struck out eight batters, allowing just an earned run, while walking two.
Northeast struck first in the bottom of the first inning and added five insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to top the Lakers in the first game of the doubleheader.
Christian Dumont (Bellevue, Neb.) went 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Drew Smith (Elkhorn, Neb.) added a double.
In the finale, the Hawks took a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth inning, where they eventually exploded for six runs to keep the Lakers from mounting any comeback.
Jayden Sinju (Murray, Utah) was 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs and a double. Bryce Walker (Papillion, Neb.) added two hits, two RBI and a double, while Dumont had two hits and two runs.
The Hawks step out of conference play to square off with McCook Community College at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Norfolk.
