Special to the viewpoint, Reporter

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – A tough defensive effort by Western Nebraska Community College proved to be the difference on Friday night, topping the Northeast Community College women’s basketball team 99-49 at the Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff, Neb.

At the end of the first quarter, the Hawks trailed only by seven points, but 24 points in the second quarter by the Cougars kept the Hawks defense in check throughout the game.

Western Nebraska used its height to its advantage as seven Cougars are listed at 6-foot or taller. WNCC grabbed 50 rebounds and shot 47 percent from the field.

For the Hawks, Irene Sanz (Vilassar de Mar, Spain) and Teagan Pompa (Elgin, Ill.) recorded nine points each in the loss.

The Hawks (8-7) return to action on Monday, squaring off with North Platte Community College at 5 p.m. at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
