October 22, 2018
NORFOLK, Neb. – Scoring goals wasn’t an issue for the Northeast Community College women’s soccer team on Sunday. The Hawks posted five second-half goals to defeat North Iowa Area Community College 5-0 in the first round of the ICCAC Tournament at Memorial Field in Norfolk.
Northeast recorded four goals in a 15-minute stretch to keep North Iowa searching for answers for much of the second half. Hailey Curry put the Hawks on the scoreboard first in the 63rd minute, prompting an offensive surge. Ellie Gess found the back of the net in the 69th and 78 minute, while Mandy Stricker and Lizzy McCalla followed with goals in the 73rd and 82nd minute, respectively.
“I am very happy with how we played today,” head coach Chad Miller said. “We worked on some things this week during practice and I felt the girls executed them well. We had a little trouble getting the ball past their goalie in the first half, but we were able to keep it up and start getting through. North Iowa played a great game and they have really improved since the first time we saw them. It was comforting to know we were able to up our game and get the victory.”
Gess and Curry tallied three shots each, while the Hawks went on to out-shoot NIACC 17-1.
The Hawks travel east to battle Iowa Central Community College at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Ft. Dodge, Iowa to continue their march towards a conference title.
