Northeast men’s soccer blanked by #17 Marshalltown, 8-0

MARSHALLTOWN, IA – The Northeast Community College men’s soccer team fell to #17 Marshalltown Community College here Saturday, 8-0.

Hawks Coach Doug Seigle said the game was about two completely different halves. “We came out and played well to start the game but could not keep up the intensity against the 17th ranked team in the country,” he said.

Marshalltown came out strong in the first half, and Northeast was able to match their intensity for most of the first half. Seigle said he was happy with the first half with the exception of giving up a late goal shortly before the half.

Score at halftime was 2-0.

“Unfortunately, the game is 90 minutes, and we were not able to keep up with them in the second half,” said Seigle. The Hawks gave up four goals to the Tigers in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

Marshalltown outshot the Hawks, 34-7, and also had more shots on goal with 20 to Northeast’s one.

Carter Holthus recorded 12 saves for Northeast.

“I am extremely disappointed that we could not regroup as a team after Marshalltown started pushing their attack,” said Seigle. “We are a young team and will learn from this experience, but we need to grow up very quickly if we want to find success in the post season.”

Northeast hosts Hawkeye Community College on Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park in Norfolk. Game time is 4 p.m.
