Northeast’s Wecker earns conference athlete of the week honor

NORFOLK – A member of the Northeast Community College volleyball team has been named the Division II Athlete of the Week by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.

Mackenzie Wecker, O’Neill, has been a strong asset to the Hawks (10-1) this season. The team’s biggest win came against the fifth-ranked Des Moines Area Community College. Wecker contributed a team high 58 digs in the five set match.

Wecker ranks fourth overall in digs in the National Junior College Athletic Conference (NJCAA). With a total of 233, including 12 in Northeast’s win over Ellsworth Community College Wednesday, she averages 7.39 digs per set. Last week against Fort Scott and Marshalltown, she led her team with 24 digs the first game and 19 the second.

Wecker’s selection as conference athlete of the week came on the same day the Northeast volleyball team entered the national rankings at eleventh in the NCJAA Division II Top 25 poll.

The Hawks will be in action next against #7 Central Community College in Columbus on Wednesday, September 14.
