Cartoons are running to campus

Bugs Bunny, Spongebob Squarepants, Phineas and Ferb…the list of classic cartoons could go on and on. The Student Government Association is bringing their love of cartoons to campus.

The spring tradition of 5k fun runs continues in its fourth year on the campus of Northeast Community College on April 30, 2016. The Student Government Association is hosting this event and chose the theme of cartoons.

Director of Student Activities, Carissa Kollath, says “I just think a theme just gives it something different. There are so many 5ks out there and there are so many different ones you can do. So we just wanted something that made it special and ways we could tweak it to make it more exciting.”

The route of the run will work its way throughout the Northeast campus and will begin at 10:30 am on April 30. The whole course is wheelchair, stroller, and roller skate accessible, so no need to worry about not being able to participate.

Registration is still open to the public, but don’t delay signing up. Cost to run is $40 until April 12th. After April 12th, the price will increase to $45. Late registrations will be taken until the day of the race, however, to guarantee yourself a t-shirt, sign up by April 12.

Northeast staff members can also sponsor a runner in the race and can contact Carissa to become a 5k fun run sponsor.

The money raised is used for scholarships for leadership students. If you’re involved in RASA, Student Ambassadors, Student Activities Council, or Student Government Association you have an opportunity to receive a future scholarship sponsored by the fun run. In the past year, three $500 scholarships have been given to students who are members of at least one of  the four leadership groups on campus.

Don’t run? That’s perfectly okay. Kollath says “The great thing about a fun run, is that there is no pressure and it’s about your own personal goals. You’re only racing yourself.”

To register, visit the event website. Make sure to also print out the event waiver and bring it with you on  the day of the 5k.
