Northeast’s Kitantou named ICCAC Player of the Week

NORFOLK – A member of the Northeast Community College women’s basketball team has been recognized by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

Maeva Kitantou, a 5’ 8” freshman guard, has been named Player of the Week by the ICCAC for the week of November 30-December 6.

Kitantou, Orleans, France, has played an integral role in Northeast’s success early this season. The Hawks won all three of their games last week by a considerable margin. Her biggest game came Friday afternoon against Southwestern Community College. Kitantou led the team in scoring with 19 points, including shooting 77-percent from the field and 75-percent from behind the arc. She averaged more than 14 points per game last week and holds the 17th best three-point percentage in the nation at 48.6-percent.

“Maeva has been a key performer for our 11-2 basketball team,” said Matt Svehla, Northeast coach. “She possesses athleticism and quickness to make plays in the open court and she is also shooting near 50-percent from behind the three-point line. Being good in both of these areas provides our team with a real luxury.  She can beat you with her speed, but she can also beat you from the three-point line.  Maeva has played well and I expect her game to continue to evolve.“

Northeast Community College is one of 16 members of the ICCAC.

The Hawks will host the Concordia University JV on Friday, December 11, in the Cox Activities Center on the Northeast campus in Norfolk. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

The Viewpoint’s sports reporter Will Bates talked with Kitantou about the team and missing her hometown.
