Interview With Northeast Community College Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Matt Svehla

William Bates Jr, Sports Reporter

Recently, Northeast Community College Women’s head coach Matt Svehla reached his 500th career win against Iowa Western Community College. Svehla has been at Northeast for 21years and has had great success with national rankings and in tournament play. He talked with The Viewpoint about his success and what it’s like to coach a two year team.

Will Bates- What was going through your mind, as you clinched your 500th win?

Coach Svehla -“This was a big win for the team, a lot was on the line for us. It really didn’t sink in that I got my 500th win until the game was over.”

Will Bates- Do you think Community College sports are different from a 4-year University? If so, How?

Coach Svehla- “Yes, there’s a bit of a difference between the two. You have more experienced players at a 4-year University rather than a community college, and you have the do’s and don’ts, plus the maturity of players.”

Will Bates- How do you get your team prepared for national rankings in a short period of time?

Coach Svehla- “ We just go out and play.We try to worry more about the game; instead of playing for rankings because it could become a distraction.”

Will Bates- Do most of your players go on to a 4-year University?

Coach Svehla- “ Some do, and most are being recruited by big universities, but it depends on the talent.”
