Northeast Defeats Iowa Central In Women’s Basketball
November 20, 2014
FT. DODGE, IA – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team captured a 72-55 win over Iowa Central Community College here Tuesday.
Jayla Mayes-Jackson led Northeast with 14 points while Megan Trinder had 13.
Despite the victory, the Hawks had trouble early, according to Coach Matt Svehla.
“We had some foul issues in the first half with Janea getting her third foul three minutes into the game and Megan had her second foul midway through the first half. Our first half offense was slowed without those two, but we were fortunate that our defense kept us in the game.”
Northeast started slow in the opening minutes of the second half and trailed 33 to 23. After a timeout, the Hawks settled in and got back into the game and eventually took over.
Svehla said, “We went from being down ten to being up by 21 with about four minutes to play. Megan, Jayla, and Octavia (McGraw) played well on both ends of the court in the second half.”
For the game, the three combined for 37 points with 34 of those coming in the second half.
Other scorers for Northeast include Janea Bunn, ten, Ena Viso, nine, McGraw and Yasmin Miller, eight, Sydney Koel, seven, and Brooke Bauer, three.
The Hawks will host the Northeast Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Cox Activities Center on the Northeast campus in Norfolk. Northeast will face Northeastern Junior College at 7 p.m. Friday and Kirkwood Community College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
