Northeast Community College broadcasting, journalism and mass media students were honored for their work at the annual Nebraska Collegiate Media Association (NCMA) Conference, Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. NCMA sponsors the Golden Leaf Awards every spring for excellence in print, digital, radio and TV media. Northeast students took top honors in several categories including Best TV Newscast for the Hawk-TV staff and Best Promotional Content, won by the staff of the Northeast college online newspaper, The Viewpoint. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students. These awards represent a lot of determination, hard work and striving to be the best. Northeast is the only two-year college that competes in the Golden Leaf contest on a yearly basis, so our students are competing alongside juniors and seniors from four-year institutions. It’s a great honor” says Northeast Broadcasting Instructor Brian Anderson.
The two day event also included student sessions with noted National Geographic Photographer, Sam Abell, National Geographic Director of Photography Books, Leah Bendavid-Val, and Hollywood cinematographer and filmmaker James Chressanthis, ASC whose keynote address on Saturday inspired students to present human stories through their filmmaking and writing.
Along with Northeast, other participating colleges include Wayne State College, Doane College, Hastings College, Peru State College and Chadron State College. Two Northeast Instructors are also among the NCMA Executive Board. Broadcasting Instructor Brian Anderson serves as the comptroller of the organization while Mass Media Instructor Nancy-Sutton Smith was elected as secretary during the spring conference.
