NORFOLK – Northeast Community College has signed a women’s basketball recruit out of South Dakota.
Sydney Koel is a 6’2” forward/post from Sioux Falls. Hawks Coach Matt Svehla said Koel is a great player for the Northeast program. “Sydney is a mobile post player who can run the floor, post up, and also shoot the occasional three. Having a post with that kind of size and versatility is such a luxury.”
Koel has played on a high caliber team at Sioux Falls Washington High School. The Warriors captured the 2014 AA South Dakota State Championship title. The team has placed at the state tournament the previous three seasons: 2013 AA 3rd Place state champion; 2012 AA state runner-up: and 2011 AA 5th Place in the state championship.
Koel, who has a four-year high school record of 87-13, was named to the “All-Tourney Team” in the 2014 South Dakota State Tournament.
“Sydney comes from a high school program that knows winning,” Svehla said. “Her high school team, Washington, has been a premier team in the state of South Dakota during her entire high school career and she played a huge part in helping her team capture the 2014 AA State Championship. Sydney Koel is a great addition to our program and I think that she has huge potential.”
The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team finished the 2013-14 season with a
26-4 record. The team was ranked several times in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Top 25 poll during the past year.
