NORFOLK – Several members of the women’s and men’s basketball teams at Northeast Community College have earned post season-honors.
Women’s Coach Matt Svehla said seven players have been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) academic all-region teams. To be named to the NJCAA Academic All-Region 1st Team, the student-athlete must have earned a 3.5 and above grade point average (GPA). To be named to the Academic All-Region 2nd Team, the student-athlete must have earned a 3.0-3.49 (GPA).
Those named to the Academic 1st Team All-Region include sophomore Emily Gamble, Omaha, and freshmen Yasmin Miller,Mountain Creek, Qld, Australia, and Annie Szczepaniak, Bellevue. Student-athletes named to Academic 2st Team All-Region include sophomores Lexi Murphy, Papillion, and Olivia Schneiders, Dixon, and freshmen Megan Trinder, Holywell, Qld, Australia, and Ena Viso, Copenhagen, Denmark.
Three Hawks players have been named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Association’s (ICCAC) Region XI All-Region Team. They are sophomores Emily Gamble, Omaha, and Alison Klostergaard, Beresford, SD, and freshmen Megan Trinder, Holywell, Qld, Australia.
“I commend these young ladies for their academic and athletic accomplishments,” Svehla said. “We had a very good basketball season and these student-athletes should be very proud of their team and individual accomplishments, both on the court and in the classroom.”
Northeast ended the 2014 season with a 26-4 record and was ranked during the season in the NCJAA Top 25 Division I poll.
In addition, Dan Anderson, Northeast’s men’s basketball coach, reports that four his players also earned academic honors.
Freshmen, Jesse Brown, Madison, SD, and Chima Moneke, Canberra, Australia, were named to the NJCAA Academic 1st Team All-Region, while Dionte Smith, Nassau, Bahamas, and sophomore Jabbar Washington, Michigan City, IN, were named to the Academic 2nd Team All-Region.
It was also announced recently that Washington has been named to the ICCAC 2nd Team All-Region while Khapri Alston, a sophomore from Chicago, and freshman Lyle Hexom, of Omaha, were named to the ICCAC Honorable Mention team.
The Northeast men finished the 2013-14 season with a 14-17 record.
