NORFOLK – A shot at the buzzer fell short for the Northeast Community College men’s basketball team Saturday night as the Hawks fell to Marshalltown Community College in double overtime. The Tigers made a shot with just over three seconds left in the second overtime to hold on for the win, 101-100.
It was a back and forth game. Northeast built an eleven point lead in the first half, but Marshalltown cut into that lead with a 43-41 advantage at half-time. Neither team could pull away in regulation as Buay Tuach of Northeast hit a three-pointer to tie the ball game to send the game in overtime.
Again, neither team could pull away in the first overtime as Lyle Hexom of the Hawks hit a three-pointer to tie the ballgame with less than two seconds remaining. Marshalltown outscored the Hawks
8-7 in the second overtime to seal the victory.
Three Hawks scored in double figures – Lyle Hexom had 27 points, Jabbar Washington finished with 22, and Khapri Alston had 20. Hexom and Alston recorded double-digit rebounds with 18 and 10, respectively. Northeast missed 21 free throws in the loss.
Northeast will take on Southeastern Community College on Wednesday, January 22 in West Burlington, IA. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
