NORFOLK – Two members of the Northeast Community College volleyball team have earned post season honors.
Nazya Thies has been named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) First Team – All Region, ICCAA Second Team – All Conference and Region XI All Tournament 11B Team. Thies, of Winside, played 119 sets for the Hawks this season and recorded 525 kills. That put her at 4.41 kills per set, ranking her second in the conference in total kills and kills per set. She also recorded 30 ace serves and 457 digs and 15 solo blocks.
“Nazya has been a big part of our team this year as she led us in kills in almost every match,” said Amanda Schultze, Northeast head coach. “We put a lot of pressure on her offensively this year and she did a great job at staying focused and disciplined.”
Brittany Sullivan was named to the ICCAC Second Team – All Region and ICCAC Honorable Mention – All Conference. Sullivan, of Allen, also played 119 sets for Northeast this season. She recorded 266 kills, 60 ace serves and 496 digs, which puts her at 4.17 digs per set. That ranks her eighth in the conference.
“Brittany is an athlete who doesn’t stop. She keeps pushing herself as well as her teammates and has really been a big part of our team,” Schultze said. “She did a great job defensively for us this year and we look to her to have a big impact on our passing and defense next year as well.”
Schultze said these are deserving honors for the Northeast athletes. “Coach (Sarah) Novak and I are very proud of these two young ladies and the work they put into this first season. They both deserve these awards without a doubt, and we are looking forward to having both of them back next year.”
The Northeast volleyball team concluded its season in the opening round of the ICCAC Region XI-B bracket tournament and finished the year with a 15-21 record. This was the first season of volleyball at Northeast since the sport was reinstated after a ten-year absence.
