NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College men’s basketball team held off a late run by Iowa Central Community College, and went on to defeat the Tritons on Saturday, on Day 2 of the Hawks Classic here, 86-81.
Northeast started off strong and was up by as much as 22 points in the first half. While Iowa Central came back and scored 49 second half points, it wasn’t enough as the Hawk’s Lyle Hexom hit a three pointer with under a minute to play to put the game out of reach.
Hexom finished with 20 points for Northeast, Jabbar Washington added 18 points, and Buay Tuach had 16. The Hawk’s Khapri Alston recorded his first double digit rebound game of the year, grabbing ten boards. Anthony Woods had a career high nine assists.
On Day 1 of the tournament, Northeast beat Iowa Lakes Community College, 101-97. Hexom hit two free throws with .8 seconds remaining in the game to ice the victory. He scored 17 points, grabbed ten rebounds, blocked eight shots and dished out six assists. Sheed Fairley also added 17 points for the Hawks. Other double digit scorers included Alston with 16, Tuach with 15, and Washington with eleven.
Northeast is now 3-2 on the season.
The Hawks will be in action this Saturday as the team will host Mount Marty at the Cox Activities Center on the Northeast campus. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
