Two students at Northeast Community College were involved in a car wreck on east Benjamin Avenue Tuesday morning.
At 10:45 a.m., the 2004 Dodge Ram pickup they were driving, lost control after they hit what appeared to be a patch of ice on the road. The car then proceeded to breaking the guard rail, hitting the retaining wall, which made the pickup go airborne. The pickup then rolled down the 30 foot drop, landing upside down.
According to police chief Bill Mizner, Braden Baseggio, O’Neill was launched out of the car and Wade Oltjenbruns, Creighton, remained in the vehicle. The EMT’s required the use of special equipment to pry open the pickup and take Baseggio out.
Both involved were flown via LifeNet to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. At this moment the condition of the two students is not know.
After the wreck, a one mile stretch of Benjamin Avenue, from Norfolk Avenue to Victory Road, was closed for four hours while the investigation took place and the wreck was cleaned-up.
