STERLING, Colo. – The Northeast Community College men’s soccer team went 1-1 over the weekend, falling to No. 13-ranked Northeastern Junior College 2-0, before recording a 1-0 victory over Pratt Community College in Sterling, Colo.

The Hawks (1-1) were unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit after being out-shot by the Plainsmen 26-4 in their first match of the 2019 season.

“With this being our first match of the year, I think we got a little over-excited to play and found ourselves out of position and giving up a lot of space to our opponent,” head coach Chad Miller said. “Once we settled in, we were able to play a little and try to find some rhythm.”

Ivan Garcia (Broomfield, Colo.) notched seven saves for the Hawks in the net.

In the win over Pratt, Ricky Guel (Fremont, Neb.) found the back of the net off an assist from Rocky Guevara (Norfolk, Neb.).

“We were able to get on the board at the 11-minute mark with some really nice possessions and great runs,” Miller added. “Rocky found himself in space with the ball and took it to the goal. His shot hit off the crossbar and rebounded out to the back post where Ricky was making his run and he put in the back of the net.”

Garcia managed to grab four saves for Northeast in the win.

Northeast returns to action on Saturday as they take on Northeast Texas Community College at 4 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Texas, followed by a match with Angelina College at 5 p.m. Sunday in Lufkin, Texas.
