NORFOLK – Two second half goals gave Iowa Lakes Community College a victory over the Northeast Community College men’s soccer team here yesterday. Final score was 2-0.

In the scoreless first half, both teams had great scoring opportunities but came up short.

Thirteen minutes into the second half, Iowa Lakes scored their first goal, then scored their second on a breakaway with six minutes left in the game.

Massimiliano Simonazzi recorded eight saves for the Hawks.

“We had some great opportunities that we slipped wide of the goal or just couldn’t finish on,” said Chad Miller, Northeast coach. “Massimiliano made some great saves to keep us in the game.”

In their previous meeting in September, Northeast defeated the Lakers, 3-2.

“Iowa Lakes has been playing extremely well lately, so for us to play well with them is a good sign,” Miller said. “We were victorious over them earlier in the season for our official conference game, but since then they have really upped their game. I know we would have to play very good soccer to compete, and I thought we did just that.”

However, Miller said he sees room for improvement with his team.

“We have to clean up mistakes. They turn out to be big ones. But overall, I am happy with how we played.”

Northeast (4-8-1) will host North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk. The game, originally scheduled for 4 p.m., will now be played at 5 p.m. The women’s game is set for 3 p.m.
