NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College men’s basketball team defeated York College JV here Tuesday night–and also sent birthday wishes to a special fan. The Hawks came out strong, going on a 20-2 run and pushing the final score to 132-75.

After the game, the Northeast players walked to the bleachers where Helen Ann Cox was seated to shake her hand and sing “Happy Birthday.” Helen Ann is the wife of Dr. Robert Cox, who served as Northeast president from 1972-1995 and for whom the Cox Activities Center on the Norfolk campus is named.

“I wanted to thank the Cox family for coming out and showing support to our program over so many years,” said Coach Dan Anderson. “(Helen) is a wonderful lady, and it made me feel good when our guys went over to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her without me even saying anything.”

“That’s the group we have this year. They’re wonderful on and off the court. We have a group of guys that make sure they say thank you to people that go out of their way to support this program. I am a very proud coach, and I am very happy knowing that our group of guys are doing the right things every day.”

Northeast was led by Calvin Harrington, who went 9-for-9 and scored 21 points. Mathew Wingett put up 24 points, and Milan Skundric, 18.

The Hawks (10-5) return to action on Thursday when they host Quakerdale Prep at the Cox Activities Center on the Norfolk campus. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
