NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College volleyball team defeated Iowa Lakes Community College here Wednesday night in the first round of the Region XI-B playoffs. The Hawks won in straight sets, 25-16, 25-12 and 25-18, earning a spot in the final round of the tournament.

Hawks Coach Amanda Schultze said her team played with considerable intensity. “The girls started the game with high energy and kept it up all the way through. Our front row was very strong with both attacking and blocking.”

Schultze also noted that the Hawks’ aggressive play behind the serving line gave them a team total of 11 ace serves.

Kelsey Shoemaker led Northeast in kills with 13 and also had one solo block and five assist blocks. Tabitha Kander and Mackenzie Wecker registered four ace serves each, and Wecker also had 16 digs. Jordan Vogt led assists with 28.

“This was a very good start to regional play, and we are really excited to advance to the final round,” said Schultze.

The Hawks (25-11), the #3 seed, square off against #2 Iowa Central Community College in the Region XI-B Championship on Saturday at Southwestern Community College in Creston, IA. Game time is 2 p.m.
