NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College women’s soccer team took #7 Iowa Western Community College into overtime here yesterday. And although the Hawks dropped the game, 1-0, Coach Chad Miller saw it as a win.

“Playing into overtime with one of the top rated teams in the country is a win in my book no matter the outcome,” he said. “The game was great, the atmosphere was great, the girls played a fantastic game. Our girls really wanted a win from this, but they all know how great of an effort they gave and how successful this outcome is.”

Iowa Western controlled possession for the majority of the game, but Miller said his team’s defense did a phenomenal job shutting down their attack and keeping their shots outside of the 18 box.

About three minutes into the overtime period for the scoreless game, Iowa Western netted a corner kick. Northeast goalkeeper Kaitlyn Van Surksum got a touch on it, but an Iowa Western player on the backside was able to corral the ball and put it in the net.

Van Surksum recorded 13 saves for Northeast. Iowa Western had 14 shots on goal to Northeast’s four.

“Mixed emotions from our girls after the loss, but we were extremely proud of our effort tonight,” said Miller.

Northeast (2-7-2) hosts Indian Hills Community College on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park in Norfolk. Game time is 4 p.m.
