NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College women’s softball team was swept by Central Community College here Wednesday, dropping the first game 11-3 and the second 15-3.
“I thought both pitchers (Logan Runge and Paige Schmidt) did a decent job of getting ground balls and fly balls, but we continued to struggle to make plays for them,” Hawks Coach Iris Woodhead said about both games.
In the first game, the Hawks scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning. Schmidt (1-for-4) and Kelsie Myers (1-for-2) each scored a run, and Alyson Romey went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The second game, played to five innings, saw Northeast scoring one run each in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Paige Schmidt went 2-for-3 with two runs and a triple, while Romey and Leah Grovijohn each had an RBI.
Northeast has now dropped four straight to fall to 4-14 on the season.
“I think all teams have a wall they hit during their season, some taller and thicker than others. We’ve hit our wall,” said Woodhead. “But instead of cohesively taking the bricks down one by one and pushing through, we are at times building the wall higher. We are trying to do too much instead of playing simple fundamental softball.”
The Hawks return to action Friday when they host North Platte Community College in a doubleheader at the Ta-Ha-Zouka Park softball complex in Norfolk. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m.
