ESTHERVILLE, IA – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball struggled on both ends of the court here Friday against Iowa Lakes Community College with poor shooting and turnovers and fell to the Lakers, 69-61. It is the first loss of the season for the Hawks.
Northeast shot a season low 39-percent from the field, but Iowa Lakes only shot 32-perent. The Hawks were just 3-17 from three point range and 11-17 from the free throw line compared to 4-7 and 23-20, respectively for Iowa Lakes.
Matt Svehla, Hawks coach, said, “We could not get much consistent play on either end of the floor. We had too many breakdowns defensively that either gave them something easy or gave them free throws. Offensively, our execution wasn’t clean. We had sloppy possessions and we were impatient. Turnovers and early jump shots kept us from getting into the flow.”
Raveen Murray led the Hawks with 21 points, Maeva Kitantou finished with 14 points and Sydney Koel had 13. Other scorers for Northeast – Brooke Bauer, 8, Hannah Riley, 4, Bianca McDonald, 3, Francesca Minali, 2, and Ceara Leavai, 1.
On Tuesday, Northeast (6-1) travels to Concordia, KS, to face Cloud County Community College at
6 p.m.
Also on Friday, the Northeast men lost to Lake Region State College (ND) in the Lake Region Classic in Devils Lake, ND, 119-111 in overtime. On Saturday, the Hawks (3-3) will continue play in the tournament and its faces Cankdeska Cikana Community College (ND) at 12 p.m.
