NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College women’s and men’s basketball teams were victorious on day two of the Hawks Classic here Saturday.
The women’s team is now 5-0 after a 70-68 win over Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). The Bears tied the game at 68 with two free throws with 12 seconds remaining. On the next possession, the Hawk’s Raveen Murray missed a driving shot, but Francesca Minali was able to get the offensive rebound and a put back with 5 seconds remaining. Northeast went ahead 70-68 and defended DMACC’s final attempt.
Matt Svehla, Northeast coach, said the game came down to the end with both teams fighting hard.
“Both teams made what I would call early season mistakes, but, at times, both teams also played good basketball. We had several girls sitting due to fouls issues, but we still found a way to get it done. We out shot them from the field 40-percent to 31-percent, but DMACC shot 34 free throws to Northeast’s 15. That is too big of discrepancy and we were fortunate to overcome that.”
Murray led Northeast with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists. Minali had 16 points and eleven rebounds and Broke Bauer finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Sydney Koel had six points; Maeva Kitantou (5), Ceara Leavai, (4) and Bianca McDonald (1).
In a men’s contest, Northeast defeated Iowa Central Community College 101-94.
Kevin Metoyer led the Hawks with 23 points and ten assists; Earvin Perroni finished with 17 points and five rebounds; Marty Hills had 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals; Peirre Conwell had15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds; and Deon Whiteside, 13 points and five rebounds. Mathew Wingett had seven points, Jalen Mobley, five, and Trevon Moody, three.
The Hawks are 2-2 on the season.
