NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team’s outstanding season came to an end Saturday as the Hawks fell to Iowa Western Community College in the National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Division I Region XI Championship game here, 66-61.

“We missed some makeable shots in the first half and found ourselves down by six points,” said Northeast Coach Matt Svehla. “Our second half start was pretty good as we scored the first two baskets. Both teams traded blows throughout the second half, but they hit a couple of big threes and we didn’t answer on our end.”

Megan Trinder led Northeast with 17 points and four assists. Yasmin Miller finished with 14, Janea Bunn had 13 points and 12 rebounds, Ena Viso contributed eight points, Jayla Mayes-Jackson, 6, and Sydney Koel, 3.

Svehla said, “It was disappointing that we lost, but we played hard and we fought to the end. I am really going to miss our sophomores as they have given so much to our program during the past couple of years.  Their passion for our program will be tough to replace.”

The #23 Hawks finish the season with a 25-6 record.
