NORFOLK – Yasmin Miller had 15 points and 13 rebounds in leading the Northeast Community College’s women’s basketball team to a 62-33 win over the Midland University JV here Tuesday. Janea Bunn finished with 13 points, nine blocked shots and eight rebounds.

Hawks Coach Matt Svehla said defense was key in Tuesday’s victory as the Hawks held Midland to just seven points in the second half.

“We did not shoot the ball very well tonight, but our defense really stepped up in the second half. We were only 3 for 14 shooting from the three point line and we were only 5 for 13 from the foul line.  Those numbers are not very good, but solid defense can bail a team out when those rough offensive nights happen. To hold a team to only seven points in the second half is pretty good.”

Other scorers for Northeast include Megan Trinder, 8, Sydney Koel and Kara Valasek, 6, Octavia McGraw, 4, Ena Viso, 3, Allie Millard, Hannah Riley and Annie Szcepaniak, 2, and Jayla Mayes-Jackson, 1.

The Hawks (19-4) will see action on Saturday as its hosts Iowa Western Community College in the Cox Activities Center on the Northeast campus in Norfolk. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
