DODGE, IA – It was a good weekend for the Northeast Community College golf team. The Hawks claimed the Iowa Central Community College Ryder Cup title Sunday at the Ft. Dodge (IA) Country Club.

This was a four team tournament with a unique format that featured three, two person teams that played for a combined score and then they were awarded points by how they finished. Each team played three different formats: scramble, alternate shot and best ball.

Northeast’s Michael Bergquist and Stephen GrandPre finished first with a 1 under round of 70. The Hawks’ Alex Dredge and Preston Peters shot a 72 and Conner Watson and Michael Brockhaus carded a 74.

The results allowed the Hawks an overall first place finish with 13.5 points and claim its first tournament victory since men’s golf was reinstated at Northeast in 2012.

Iowa Central was second with 16.5 points, Iowa Lakes Community College was third with 18.5 points, and Des Moines Area Community College finished with 29.5 points.

“I am so proud of the way my guys played today,” said Brad Bosh, Hawks coach. “First, this was a course that none of our team had ever played before, and second, they came together as a team and won! I am especially happy with the way my freshman stepped up today and came through in some clutch situations.”

Bosh said the tournament went down to the wire. “We battled to the end when Michael Bergquist had to make a six foot putt for par on the last hole for us to win! We’re getting better as a team every day.”

Northeast will next take part in the Midland University Invitational at the Fremont Country Club on Tuesday.
