NORFOLK – A balanced scoring attack allowed the Northeast Community College women’s basketball team to improve to 5-0 in its win Friday night here over the Doane College JV. Eleven Hawks players scored in the 86-41 victory.
“We had control of the game early, but I never felt we were playing our best basketball,” said Coach Matt Svehla. “We had some good moments, but we also had some careless turnovers and some poor defensive possessions.”
Svehla said Emily Gamble had a nice first half for the Hawks. “Emily stepped up and made some plays for us in the first half. That helped push our lead to 20 points at halftime. We took control of the game in the second half, which allowed us to play our bench a bit more.”
Gamble finished with 17 points, Annie Szczepaniak had 14 for Northeast, Ena Viso had eleven and Alison Klostergaard finished with ten points.
Svehla said, “It was good to see so many players score their first college basket. I am happy for them.”
The Northeast men and women basketball teams will be in action on Saturday as they host the Mount Marty JV at the Cox Activities Center on the Northeast campus. The men play at 2 p.m. while the women tip-off at 4 p.m.
