NORFOLK – Northeast Community College’s Jabbar Washington hit two clutch free throws with 7.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 97, while North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) got a shot off that fell short to send Wednesday’s contest into overtime.
The Hawks outscored NDSCS 11-7 in OT to go on to pick up its first win of the season, 108-104 at the Cox Activities Center here. It was an exciting game that saw Northeast down 18 at halftime, but the Hawks clawed their way back into the game.
Washington led Northeast with 24 points, five assist and three steals. Buay Tauch and Chima Moneke both added 16 points, Khapri Alston had 15, Lyle Hexom finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, and Sheed Fairley rounded out the double digit scorers with 10.
This weekend, Northeast will host the men’s and women’s Hawks Classic. On Friday, North Platte Community College will take on Des Moines Area Community College at 2 p.m. in a women’s contest followed by a men’s game featuring Iowa Central Community College and Central Community College at 4 p.m. At 6 p.m., the Northeast women will take on Iowa Lakes Community College while the Northeast men will face Iowa Lakes at 8 p.m.
The tournament continues on Saturday. All games will be played in the Cox Activities Center on the Northeast campus in Norfolk.
