Basic life support course to be offered at Northeast

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a Basic Life Support (BLS) course for healthcare providers later this month.

BLS for Healthcare Provider Course (HLTH 5300/19S & CRN #70266) will be held Saturday, January 19, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in Room 105 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Norfolk campus.

This course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize a number of life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. A BLS for Healthcare Providers course certification card will be issued upon successful completion.

Cost of this class, with Ethan Larson the instructor, is $60. The textbook for the course is available in the Hawks Shop in the Northeast Student Center, (402) 844-7140.

Class on designing home yoga practice coming to Northeast

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a class later this month on designing a home yoga practice.

Design an At-Home Yoga Practice (HPER 5100/19S & CRN #70326) meets on Thursday, January 31, from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus.

With busy lifestyles and schedules, not everyone has access to a yoga class or studio. In this class, participants will learn basic asanas (poses), yoga breathing techniques, safety and injury prevention. They will also learn the different styles of yoga, ideas for creating a home yoga space, suggestions for accessories and sequences for a personal routine. Handouts will be provided along with a list of resources that includes DVDs, books and apps.

Participants are asked to dress in comfortable clothes to exercise.

Cost of the class, with Tina Collison the instructor, is $25.

Electrical Licensing Prep to be offered at Northeast Community College

NORFOLK – The Applied Technology Division at Northeast Community College will offer a two-credit course for those who would like to take the State Electrical Exam for licensing.

Electrical Licensing Prep (ELTR 2025/19S & CRN #23475) will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays, January 28-February 26, from 7-10 p.m. in the Applied Technology building, Room 115, on the Northeast campus in Norfolk.

Instructor Dan Frohberg will prep students in Basic Electricity Calculations, Code Sections and State of Nebraska Electrical Law.

Cost of the course is $232.

Northeast to provide more EMS workshops in area communities

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Department at Northeast Community College in Norfolk has announced two free, one-session workshops for emergency medical service technicians during the month of January.

The workshops are offered for three continuing education credits. They will be held from 7-10 p.m. All workshops will be conducted in local fire halls.

There is no need to pre-register. The workshops, dates and locations include:

Northeast Community College to offer BLS for healthcare provider session

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer another Heart Code – BLS for Healthcare Provider Online & Skills Session course, beginning soon.

The first portion of this course (HLTH 5300/19S & CRN #70233) is web-based and is available on-line
24 hours a day. The skills session meets Saturday, January 26, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., in Room 101 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Norfolk campus.

The Basic Life Support course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking. This course is designed for the first time or renewal certification and has two parts for completion.

Part 1 provides a flexible alternative to classroom training. Part 2 is a skills session where hands on practice and competency testing are completed with a Certified AHA Instructor. When online Part 1 is completed, students will register for the Skills Sessions. Participants are to bring their online completion certificate (Part 1 completed within the last 60 days) to the Skills Session for which they have registered.

Online key codes for Part 1 are available at the Hawks Shop in the Student Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140. NOTE: Participants need to bring their AHA Part 1 Health Care Provider Online Course Completion Certificate to be admitted to the Skills Session. No textbook is required for this class.

Northeast Community College to offer online and skills heartsaver sessions

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer additional Heart Code – Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid On-line Skills Sessions.

Three testing sessions – Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid (HLTH 5130/19S & CRN #70231); Heartsaver CPR/AED – Adult, Infant and Child (HLTH 5150/19S & CRN #70232); Heartsaver First Aid (HLTH 5105/18S & CRN #70230) will be held Saturday, January 26, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid course CPR/AED (testing sessions will cover any of the combinations as listed above) – teaching rescuers to recognize and treat cardiac arrest and choking for adults, children and infant victims, use an AED and First Aid – teaching management of certain environmental reactions; allergic reactions, cuts, wounds, bites, and various situations requiring treatments.

The on-line course is designed for the first time or renewal certification.  This course is accessible 24 hours a day and provides a flexible alternative to classroom training for the course itself. After completing this course, students are eligible to register for the testing session. Online key codes for Part 1 (online course) are available at the Hawks Shop in the Norfolk campus Student Center, (402)-844-7140.  Students will need to bring their AHA Online Course Completion Certificate (within 60 days) to be admitted to the Skills Testing Session. Meal prep class coming to Northeast Community College

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a class on small-scale meal preparation, beginning soon.

Meal Prep for One or Two (HOEC 5175/19S & CRN #70325) meets on Wednesday, January 23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus.

Cooking for just one or two people can be a challenge, and this class will introduce learners to planning and preparing meals on a smaller scale. They will discover the “Power Hour” technique in which meal prep is completed in an hour or less. They will also learn how to downsize full recipes, how to freeze meals and how to use mason jars as an important tool for preparing salads. Several take-home recipes, including single-serving recipes, will be provided.

Cost of the class, with Tina Collison the instructor, is $20.

Nurse Aide course to be held at Northeast Community College in Norfolk

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will hold another Nurse Aide course beginning later this month.

The course (NURA 1110/19S & CRN #24582) will meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.  in Room 115 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Norfolk campus. Gretchen Hupp is the instructor.

This three-credit course is designed to meet the Nebraska Health and Human Services System training requirements for nurse aide certification and employment in long-term care facilities. The class combines classroom lecture and laboratory application for the development of basic skills needed to provide safe, effective, and caring services to the elderly or chronically ill patient of any age in a long-term care facility.

Upon completion of this course, the student is eligible to take the state written and practical skills exam. After successfully passing this examination and completing the application procedure, the student’s name will be placed on the basic nurse aide registry at the Nebraska Health and Human Services Regulation and Licensure, Credentialing Division.

Cost of the course is $348. An additional $45 fee will be required is a student chooses to register to take the Certified Nursing Assistant exam at the end of the course. A book is also available at the Hawks Shop, which is located in the Student Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140.

Paramedic refresher course coming to Northeast Community College

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will be the site of a Paramedic Refresher course, sponsored by the Allied Health Department.

This course (EMTN 6295/19S & CRN #24582), will meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, January 29-31, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus.

This is a 24-hour refresher training course that fulfills required content for recertification as a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

The cost of the class is $180 and includes a lunch buffet for the three days.

Northeast to offer precision ag training classes

NORFOLK, NE – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a series of precision agriculture training sessions, beginning soon.

Decisions Driven by Data: Utilize the Power of Your Data to Make Informed Decisions (AGRI 5125/19S & CRN #70124) will be held Thursday, January 24, from 6-9 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus.

This session will help participants understand how to utilize data to drive their decisions making processes in an objective way. By making decisions based on collected data, producers will become more attuned to the needs of their crops and livestock. Topics covered include: how to spread the cost of data over multiple years, how to utilize data to help make objective decisions, sources of data that make a sizable impact on the bottom line, how to determine the primary factors that influence profit on an operation, how to organize data to be better used in the decision making process, tools available to analyze operation data and help in the decision making process, services available to help with data driven decision making and incorporating multi-year data into the decision process.

Precision Agriculture Implementation: The Right Way For You (AGRI 5130/19S & CRN #70127) will meet Tuesday, February 5, from 6-9 p.m. in the same location.

This training on precision agriculture evaluation will help participants determine what management practices are right for their operations. Topics covered will include: what is precision agriculture, the impacts of precision agriculture on an operation, what questions to ask when determining the right match for operations, steps to implements the right plan and new equipment vs. modifying current equipment.

Variable Rate Irrigation: Possibly the Best Money You Can Spend (AGRI 5135/19S & CRN #70130) will meet Thursday, February 21, from 6-9 in the same location.

This precision agriculture technology training will help participants address natural resources concerns while having a direct impact on the bottom line. Topics covered will include: reduced water usage, increased overall crop health, reduced movement of nitrates through the soil due to reduced puddling during irrigation, reducing the number of rounds pivots make during the season, reducing variability in crop health across the field, utilization of soil moisture probes and uses, and statutes regarding water meter installation.

Cost of each session, with Lonny Mitchell the instructor, is $30.

Leadership course set at Northeast Community College

NORFOLK –A new course for those interested in gaining leadership skills will be offered by Northeast Community College next month.

Leadership Essentials (LEAD 5125/19S & CRN #70189) will meet Wednesday, January 30, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce, 609 W. Norfolk Ave., in Norfolk.

Leading others is challenging, and it can be even more challenging when leaders are not exposed to training and development opportunities. In this course, leaders will benefit from increasing their skills in collaboration, effective communication and driving top performance.
