BETTENDORF, IA – The Northeast Community College men’s soccer team battled Scott Community College to a 3-2 win in a physical game played here Saturday.

The Hawks fell behind early in the game, with Scott’s Justin Joway netting a goal in the fifth minute, but managed to fight back. Brady Fister scored Northeast’s first goal in the 31st minute with an assist from Juan Franco Lopez. Eleven minutes later, Lopez netted another goal with an assist from Andrew Wilken, to bring the halftime score to 2-1.

Scott tied the game in the second half with another goal from Joway in the 65th minute. Northeast answered quickly when Daniel Isaza put away a penalty kick four minutes later.

The Hawks’ defense held off Scott for the remaining 20 minutes of the game, despite an injury to Northeast goalkeeper Troy Elliott.

“Now that we know Troy is okay, what a relief,” said Northeast Coach Doug Seigle. “We played hard the entire match but just could not put them away despite controlling the possession the majority of the game. We missed many easy opportunities to score and also panicked at times, which kept Scott in the game.”

Northeast outshot the Eagles, 22-15, and also recorded more shots on goal with 13 to Scott’s ten. Elliott recorded six saves for Northeast, and Carter Holthus had two.

The Hawks (2-8) host #4 Iowa Western Community College at Veterans Memorial Park in Norfolk on Wednesday. Game time 5 p.m.
