NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College women’s soccer team battled to a two-overtime tie with Iowa Lakes Community College here Tuesday, 1-1.

The Hawks started off strong, with Brandi Menephee scoring an unassisted goal within the first couple minutes of play. However, Coach Chad Miller said the hot day drained his team’s energy. “After (the goal), we struggled and couldn’t get control. Later in the half, we were able to settle in a little, but we never really found ourselves.”

A back-and-forth between Northeast and Iowa Lakes continued until about the 80th minute of the game, when the Lakers found space behind the Hawks defense and netted a goal to tie up the game and extend it to two overtimes.

In the final seconds of the second overtime, the Lakers had a breakaway opportunity but failed to score thanks to a save by Kaitlyn Van Surksum.

Van Surksum recorded seven saves for the game. Northeast had four shots on goal to the Lakers’ eight.

“We didn’t play with much energy, but it was hot, and that can take a lot out of a player when playing 90 minutes,” said Miller.

Northeast (2-5-2) travels to Bettendorf, Iowa, on Saturday to face Scott Community College.
