Hawks volleyball defeats Ellsworth in three sets

IOWA FALLS, IA – The Northeast Community College volleyball team swept Ellsworth Community College here Wednesday, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-18.

Northeast, who entered this week’s National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Top 25 at #11, started slow against Ellsworth, finding momentum late in the first set after a kill from Kelsey Shoemaker.

“We served very well in the second set and recorded six aces just in that set,” said Coach Amanda Schultze. “The third set was a little rough and we committed too many errors, but we were able to pull away with the win.”

Tabitha Kander and Courtni Kunz led the Hawks in kills with eight each. Shoemaker and Kunz recorded two blocks each, both with one solo and one assist. Mackenzie Wecker led in ace serves with five, as well as digs with 12. Monique Schafer also recorded 12 digs, and Kander had 11. Courtney Labenz had 21 assists.

Wecker was also named the Division II Athlete of the Week by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference this week.

Northeast (10-1) challenges #7 Central Community College on Wednesday, September 14, in Columbus. Game time is 7 p.m.
