CRETE – Several Northeast Community College multimedia students were the recipients of a combined 28 awards at the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association (NCMA) Golden Leaf Awards held recently at Doane College here.

Student staff members of KHWK, Northeast’s campus radio station, received seven awards, including first place finishes in the Radio Newscast and Public Service Announcement categories. The station received a third place ranking for the title of NCMA Radio Station of the Year.

Student staff members of Hawk TV, Northeast’s campus TV station, received 13 awards, including first place finishes in the TV Commercial, Music Video, Newscast, News Magazine Program and Videography categories. This is the third consecutive year that Hawk TV has been awarded first place for TV Newscast. Hawk TV also received a third place ranking for the title of NCMA TV Station of the Year.

Brian Anderson, broadcasting instructor, said the awards represent another great year of hard work among the student broadcasters.

“This is a great honor for these students and Northeast to be so well recognized for the effort and work they have put forward. We are the only two-year college participating in the NCMA Awards, competing with Nebraska’s state colleges along with Doane College and Hastings College.” he said. “Our two-year students are working hard to produce content that rivals products coming from students in four-year institutions. That says a lot about our students’ work ethic and their desire to succeed.”

The Viewpoint, Northeast’s online college newspaper, won seven awards, including first place finishes in the Video Journalism and Design categories. Monika Zuch, Fremont, earned a first place award for a video journalism piece she produced about the Northeast broadcasting department. The Viewpoint staff also won a first place award for the overall design of its website.

Other awards recipient include Marissa Lute, Laurel, who earned a third place award in the Multimedia Features category and a third place finish in the Community Collaboration category. Will Bates Jr, Kansas City, MO, received a third place award in the Video Journalism category while Bates and Tiffany Jacobsen, Norfolk, earned a second place award in the Video Journalism category. Taylor Ewald, Norfolk, earned a second place award in the Community Collaboration category.

Viewpoint adviser, Nancy Sutton-Smith, said students can use these awards on their resume to bolster additional college entrance applications or employment and it helps measure their work against the work of other students.

“The Golden Leaf Awards help The Viewpoint students see how other colleges are handling their multimedia websites. This year, The Viewpoint won best overall design, which helped my students understand that they are working on a professional news website” Sutton-Smith said.

Along with Northeast, other member schools of the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association include Wayne State College, Chadron State College, Peru State College, Doane College and Hastings College.

KHWK/Hawk TV broadcasts on Cable One Channel 23-2 on the Norfolk campus and on Channel 20 throughout Norfolk and other Cable One communities. It also streams its stations live through the website,www.khwkhawktv.com.  The Northeast Viewpoint can be found online at www.neviewpoint.com.
