Northeast Outlasts Sunrise Christian Prep, 108-100

HUTCHINSON, KS – The Northeast Community College men’s basketball team outlasted Sunrise Christian Prep in a physical contest, 108-100 on the second day of the Hutchinson Community College Classic in Hutchinson, Kansas. With the win the Hawks improve to 12-3.

In a game that saw 63 total personal fouls, Northeast used big runs to avenge their earlier loss to Sunrise, who has five players signed to play at NCAA Division One schools. The Hawks started strong with a 15-2 run, but Sunrise clawed its way back to 51-43 at intermission. Once again, Northeast used a big run to take its largest lead, 75-59, with just over 12:00 minutes remaining. As a team, the Hawks sunk 8-11 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Hawks Coach Dan Anderson said, “I was proud of the way our ball club responded after Friday night’s emotional game. Sunrise kept sending waves at us and we never backed down and continued to battle all game.”

LJ Westbrook had his best game as a Hawk leading the team in scoring with 27 points. He was 12 of 16 at the free throw line. Jalen Bradley hit five three pointers while scoring 22 points. Rounding out double digit scorers were Chima Moneke with 16, Buay Tuach with 13 and Pierre Conwell with 10. Moneke led the team in rebounds with eight while Kevin Metoyer recorded eight assists.

The Hawks outrebounded Sunrise 47-23 and recorded 27 assists on 35 made shots.

Northeast will continue non-conference play on upcoming Wednesday as it faces Iowa Central Community College in Ft. Dodge, IA. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
